The Founding Story
Why the Catskills. Why now.
Djola Ventures began with a question: what would it look like to build infrastructure that actually serves care workers: not as a charity project, but as a serious investment thesis? The care economy is the backbone of American life. The people who staff it are chronically underhoused, undercapitalized, and overlooked by the systems that claim to serve them.
The Catskills sit two hours north of New York City: a place of extraordinary natural beauty, a working-class history, and a rural community that knows what it means to be passed over by investment. Six acres on the Esopus Creek became the first site. Tiny cabins at affordable rents. A founder residency. A gathering space. A model.
The thesis is simple: proximity is the structural advantage. When care workers live alongside the founders building for them, when investors are embedded in the communities they fund, when the village itself is the product: something different becomes possible. That is what Djola Ventures is building.
The Name
Djola: a word that carries a world.

Djola: also written Diola or Jola: is the name of a West African people indigenous to the Casamance region of Senegal, the Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. For centuries, the Djola have been known as a fiercely independent, egalitarian society: a people who resisted centralized domination, who organized their communities around collective stewardship of land and water, and who built their lives in intimate relationship with the rice paddies, mangroves, and tidal creeks of the Atlantic coast.
The founder's ancestral lineage traces directly to this tradition. To carry the name Djola is to carry a memory of people who understood: long before the language of impact investing existed: that land is not a commodity to be extracted, but a living system to be tended. That community is not a market to be served, but a covenant to be honored. That the most durable infrastructure is the kind built by the people who will live inside it.
Djola Ventures is named in that spirit. Not as nostalgia, but as orientation. The villages we build, the capital structures we deploy, the founders we back: all of it is an attempt to recover and extend something the Djola people never lost: the conviction that proximity, reciprocity, and rootedness are not soft values. They are the architecture of a life worth living.

The village is not a backdrop. It is the product. Physical place: land, housing, gathering space: is the infrastructure that makes everything else possible.

Djola Ventures is building a network of affordable villages: each one a campus for care workers, founders, and community. Each one place-based, mission-aligned, and designed to replicate. The Catskills village is the proof of concept. The model is the product.
